In 1989, the last year of the Socialist regime in Bulgaria, three new mosaics were created in the foyer of the Faculty of Physics of Sofia University: “Physics” 1 & 2 by Rujko Chelebiev, and “Einstein” by Toma Varbanov. These mosaics exhibit all the hallmarks of monumental art from the 1980s, when images with symbolic meaning become more prominent, and their abundance of visual elements invokes a sense of dynamism in the viewer.
The mosaic by Toma Varbanov is focused on the image of the famous physicist, Albert Einstein. The style of the mosaic features a multitude of symbolic images and varying expanses presented in different perspectives. The depiction of Einstein is very detailed and easily recognizable, while the rest of the mosaic’s space is filled with abstract geometric shapes. The colors are well-balanced and in harmony with those used in the other two panels and, together, the three mosaics fit in well with the interior of the university.

The other two mosaic panels have a similar composition. The centers of both mosaics contain images related to mathematics and natural sciences, like physics and astronomy, while various details and designs associated with the laws of physics surround them.. The idea of the cycle of life, regardless of whether it is related to antiquity or modernity, is depicted through inscribed circles that serve as symbols of eternity.

The compositions and color palette are both compact and harmonious, demonstrating the artist’s usual attention to detail. The main colors are green, gray, and ochre, while black and white are accent shades. The relationship between space and perspective in the mosaics is intentionally left ambiguous.

The faculty of physics is part of Bulgaria’s oldest university. Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” was founded in 1888 but the faculty opened in 1963. Its alumni continue the tradition of high achievements in physics and its related fields, working in some of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the world such as CERN, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, the European Space Agency, NASA, the Max Plank-Institute and others.
